The VLC Media Player is a free and lightweight media player that plays and records most multimedia files such as video, audio, and podcasts. It can also stream media over the network.
The program is written in C++ and licensed under the GNU GPL v2.
VLC supports a wide range of audio and video file formats including Ogg, WebM, MP3, AAC, MP4, DivX, MKV, Matroska and others.
VLC can play back any format if it has a corresponding codec installed on your system. By default it comes with support for these formats: MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WAV or AIFF. You can manually install additional codecs if needed.
VLC can also transcode files to different formats (if supported by the source or destination file format). For example you can convert an Ogg-Vorbis file to MP3 or convert an MP3 into Ogg-Vorbis format.
The latest version of VLC includes several features such as integrated media library and subtitle support. The media library allows users to view thumbnails and information about their files while the subtitle support enables users to add captions to videos.
